Silent Witness Dash Cam – A Discreet, Effective Option
Silent Witness is a big name in the dash cam business. If you have looked into dash cams before then it is highly probably that you will have heard from them. They manufacture dash cams for both commercial and personal use and over the years have built themselves quite a solid reputation.
They are recognised globally and are approved by most major insurers. Currently, they have a line of dash cams, so we have chosen this one to put to the test. Take a look at our review below if you want to get a better idea of what this Silent Witness dash cam has to offer you.
- 1080P Full HD Recording
- 120 Degree Wide Angle Lens
- Parking Mode
- Plug and Play
- Continuous Recording
- The dash cam itself is not obtrusive at all.
- It has auto continuous loop recording so important files are saved.
- Both the front and the rear cameras offer 1080P HD recording.
- The 120 degree lens is a little restrictive.
- It is a fairly expensive model.
According to their company information, Silent Witness pride themselves at being at the forefront of the dash cam industry and this is why they base their designs on customer feedback that they have had from previous models.
This particular model has been designed so that it feels incredibly well built. The mounting process couldn’t be simpler and the plug and play feature allows you to simply pop the dash cam onto the mount and it will automatically fire up.
One of the things that we really liked about this Silent Witness dash cam is how discreet it is. It fits neatly behind the rear view mirror. It is so discreet that it’s actually really hard to see even from the driver or passenger seat. The control buttons are very easy to use and the setup is easy.
The Recording Quality
One of the things that you find with a lot of dash cams is that they tend to offer high quality recording from the front camera but the rear camera often lacks in recording quality. After testing out this Silent witness dash cam, we were pleased to find out that both the front and rear cameras offer incredible quality in terms of resolution.
The good thing about the cameras is that whilst the front camera records the road in front of you, the other camera actually records the interior of the car. This could potentially prove vital for an insurance claim if you need to see the aftermath of an accident. It could also be used for vlogging purposes if you like to document your journeys.
The only drawback that we noted about the recording quality is that the 120 degree lens feels a little restrictive in some environments. It would be better if it had a wider lens so that it captures more detailed footage.
The Extra Features
For an expensive model, we have to say that we were expecting a little more in terms of extra features. Usually high end devices will have a lot of extra features that are more focused on safety, but this unfortunately isn’t the case with this dash cam from Silent Witness.
However, there are a couple of extra features that do perform well. The first feature that we liked was the continuous loop recording. What this does is automatically overwrite any unnecessary footage that you have stored on your device. The good thing about this is that it prevents your memory card from filling up too quickly with footage that you don’t actually need and ensures that there is space for any footage of an accident.
What we also liked about the Silent Witness dash cam is the fact that the dash cam starts recording as soon as the ignition is switched on. This saves you from having to start up the dash cam before your journey every time. It also allows you to make sure that you don’t miss a single thing when you are out in your car.
Finally, we would like to note the parking mode. This mode will automatically activate the recording feature as soon as any shock or movement is detected via the sensors from outside of your car, even when the ignition is not running. If you park your car on the road overnight, this could be a very useful feature to have.
Whilst there are features that we really like about this dash cam, for example, the fact that the recording quality is so high and how discreet it is, the negative aspects make it hard to justify the expensive price tag.
If you are looking for a dash cam that provides an exceptional recording quality and you’re not too bothered about extra features, then this could be an option to consider. However, if you want a dash cam that is packed with extra features then there are other models that would probably be more suitable.
